The
Robin Nolan Trio Saturday night,
October 21, 2006
Robin Nolan Post-show note from Roger : As expected, Robin and his band's sold-out performance was virtuosic, amazing, moving, entertaining and simply great. The thing I love about Robin is his ability to combine incredible technical skill, sensitive & melodic improvisation, high energy and beautiful composition all in an entertaining show. He truly does it all. Here are a few photos I took: Close-up
It's a pleasure to have Robin and his band here again during their current U.S. tour. They received a standing ovation when they played here in June of 2005 together with Howard Alden, and more than a few people told me it was the best concert they'd seen at the Rog Mahal. I'm sure this will be another spectacular evening! For those of you who aren't aware of Robin, here's a quick bio on him and his band.
Robin Nolan Trio Robin Nolan, while being considered one of the world's leading Gypsy Jazz guitarists in the tradition of Django Reinhardt, has also set himself apart by creating his own unique style. From his base in Amsterdam, he has circled the globe with performances at the Lincoln Center, the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Toronto Jazz Festival, DjangoFest and numerous others. You've heard him perform his own compositions in the film "Autumn in New York" with Richard Gere and Winona Ryder, and if you were cool enough to be invited to one of the late George Harrison's parties at his English country estate, you'd have heard Robin perform there on several occasions, being one of the late Beatle's favorite guitarists. Robin is considered such a master of the Gypsy Jazz guitar style that his teaching books on the subject are an essential element of any jazz guitarist's collection. In fact, this is how I first heard of Robin's artistry. Here's a sample of the Robin Nolan Trio called "Mediterranean Blues" from his CD of the same name. You can learn more about Robin Nolan at www.robinnolan.com. Joined by his brother Kevin Nolan on rhythm guitar and Gypsy Jazz veteran Simon Planting on double bass, the Robin Nolan Trio blazes through a mix of Django, Latin and Swing classics, peppered with stunning and inventive original compositions. "The world-class Robin Nolan Trio moved their gypsy jazz into original territory with a more contemporary flavor, with remarkable fluidity. The complex beauty was astounding, as Robin flawlessly played through his innovative interpretations to create a very individual sound." - Harvey Barkan, Just Jazz Guitar, May 2005
